Windshield damage is never expected and rarely convenient.
Windshield Rock Chip Repair Repairability:

Express Auto Glass recommends replacing windshields with cracks; however, some are repairable. They must be smaller in diameter than a nickel and be out of the driver’s visibility zone.
Windshield rock chip repairs are not guaranteed, as there is a slight risk that the windshield may continue to break during the process of reconstruction due to pressure and stress.
Sometimes a full replacement is the only answer. With Express Auto Glass, if a chip is considered repairable, a quick repair may be all you need.

We do not advise repairing any rock chips that exceed the diameter of a nickel. The goal of a windshield rock repair is to restore the structural integrity of the windshield by creating a molecular bond with a UV-curing resin between the outermost layer of the windshield and the interlayer of polyvinyl butryal (PVB) sandwiched between the two sheets of glass which make up a windshield.

Windshield Replacement
If the windshield damage is more severe than a minor chip or crack, or if the crack is in the driver's line of vision, then most likely your windshield will require replacement. Cracks or holes that go all the way through the glass and cracks that are longer than a credit card usually indicate a windshield replacement is warranted.

Windshield Repair
Windshield repair is a convenient, cost effective way to fix minor chips and cracks in your car's front windshield. If your windshield damage is not directly in the driver's line of vision or on the edge of your windshield, chances are good that your auto glass can be repaired.
If the cracks extending from the impact zone are NOT larger than the diameter of a nickel, then it can usually be repaired.
